Synopsis
A custom generative AI system developed for Benchwick, the flagship brand of 3D-printed flooring manufacturer Northann Corp (NYSE: NCL). Envision produces realistic wood and tile surface designs at print resolution — imagery generated to be fabricated, through the company's patented 3D printing ecosystem, as physical flooring. Conceived and prototyped in 2002 and 2023, the system was demonstrated publicly at The International Surface Event in Las Vegas (TISE) in 2023 and 2024 (as the Envision Engine), where it was presented to customers and investors.

Role
Conceived the technical approach and led development from prototype through public demonstration: assembled and directed the initial dataset and model-development team through the system's first public showing (TISE 2023); oversaw the offshore fine-tuning team as the project scaled following its debut; designed and built the demo platform, front end and back end; returned to demonstrate the system at TISE 2024.

Technical
The system began as a custom GAN trained on a proprietary dataset — initially assembled from owned and publicly available material imagery, later expanded through partnerships with commercial scan-library producers. As the project scaled, generation moved to a fine-tuned diffusion model, with outputs produced at resolutions suitable for the company's print pipeline. Demo platform prototyped in Google Colab with an Anvil front end, later migrated to Azure, serving live generation to trade-show and client users.
